چکیده

We study the dynamics of solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into an optical lattice (OL), which is combined with an external parabolic potential. Chiefly, the one-dimensional (1D) case is considered. First, we demonstrate analytically that, in the case of the repulsive BEC, where the soliton is of the gap type, its effective mass is negative. In accordance with this, we demonstrate that such a soliton cannot be held by the usual parabolic trap, but it can be captured (performing harmonic oscillations) by an anti-trapping inverted parabolic potential. We also study the motion of the soliton in a long system, concluding that, in the cases of both the positive and negative mass, it moves freely, provided that its amplitude is below a certain critical value; above it, the soliton’s velocity decreases due to the interaction with the OL. Transition between the two regimes proceeds through slow erratic motion of the soliton. Extension of the analysis for the 2D case is briefly outlined; in particular, novel results are existence of stable higher-order lattice vortices, with the vorticity S ≥ 2, and quadrupoles. © 2005 IMACS. Photonic crystals for matter waves: Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.

We overview our recent theoretical studies on nonlinear atom optics of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into optical lattices. In particular, we describe the band-gap spectrum and nonlinear localization of BECs in one- and two-dimensional optical lattices. We discuss the structure and stability properties of spatially localized states (matter-wave solitons) in 1D lattices, as well as...

Spatiotemporal dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in linear- and circular-chain optical lattices

We investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices that have a linear-or a circular-chain configuration with the tunneling couplings between nearest-neighbor lattice sites. A discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been solved for various initial conditions and for a definite range of repulsive and attractive interatomic interactions. It is shown tha...

Controlled transport of matter waves in driven optical lattices

The idea of controlled manipulation of stable, spatially localized matter-wavepackets is attractive from the point of view of the developing atomic interferometry and precise measurement techniques based on the use of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In the recent years optical lattices were suggested as a means of achieving controlled transport of matter waves. In particular, theoretical ...

Ultracold quantum gases in one - dimensional optical lattice potentials – nonlinear matter wave dynamics –

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the nonlinear propagation of Rb Bose Einstein condensates in a trap with cylindrical symmetry. An additional weak periodic potential which encloses an angle with the symmetry axis of the waveguide is applied. The observed complex wave packet dynamics results from the coupling of transverse and longitudinal motion. We show that the experimental obs...

Controlling the motion of dark solitons by means of periodic potentials: application to Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.

We demonstrate that the motion of dark solitons (DSs) can be controlled by means of periodic potentials. The mechanism is realized in terms of cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a harmonic magnetic potential, in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). In the case when the OL period is comparable to the width of the DS, we demonstrate that (a) a moving dark soliton can be captur...
